The project
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital officially opened in Autumn 2015. The private finance initiative (PFI) project involved the design, construction, financing and operation of the new hospital on parkland, adjacent to the existing site at Springfield Park. Designed in consultation with patients and their families, the Prince’s Foundation and National Arts for Health, the hospital was the UK’s first integrated children’s health park. It provides patients, their families, and the Trust’s staff with a superb environment that enhances healing, recovery and well-being.
Approach
Vercity provides the management service agreement (MSA) for the project, with a particular focus on contract compliance to ensure the facilities management provider delivers its contractual obligations. Our award-winning collaborative working creates a positive impact for the hospital, enhancing its reputation as a state-of-the-art facility and ensuring it meets all contractual and legislative obligations. Our established consultancy services provide support to project teams internally, ensuring financial controls are in place and robust procedures are being followed.
Process
The unique, iconic design by architects BDP, integrated the hospital with Springfield Park, ensuring that the majority of bedrooms have natural views to the park. Wards have access to play decks so that children who cannot leave the ward can benefit from outdoor space. John Laing and Laing O’Rourke each hold 40% of the total investment equity in the project with Interserve holding 20%. Laing O’Rourke Construction designed and built the new hospital and Mitie (previously Interserve) maintains the hospital infrastructure. To ensure compliance, Vercity continuously reviews costs and assesses quality, benchmarking actual performance delivery against contract requirements. In turn, the hospital operates with confidence, knowing all contractual obligations are being met.
The result
The Hospital has a floor area of 51,000m2, and contains 270 beds and 16 state-of-the-art operating theatres. Furthermore, 75% of the bedrooms are single occupancy with ensuite bathrooms providing privacy and dignity for patients and their families.
Project impact
Vercity’s consultancy helps ensure the smooth operation of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, which cares for over 330,000 children, young people, and their families every year. It’s one of the biggest and busiest children’s hospitals in Europe.
‘‘As one of the busiest Children’s hospitals in Europe, we have to maintain a very complex environment to keep children, young people and our staff safe. As with all hospital buildings, there are challenges and Vercity works closely with the Trust, managing the PFI contract, to minimise the impact of these problems on our day-to-day operations. Vercity Consultancy has provided services such as Benchmarking, Estates Strategy development and compliance checks which were all valuable in managing risk and informing Trust decision making.’’
