Vercity sign Vision for Literacy Pledge 2023
Half a million children in the UK do not own a single book of their own, and many young people are still living with the impact that school closures had on their education during the pandemic.
That’s why Vercity sign the National Literacy Trust’s Vision for Literacy Business Pledge annually. The Literacy Pledge commits us to raising awareness by engaging with employees as parents, working with local schools or libraries, promoting volunteering opportunities to staff, and more. Learn more about the pledge here.
We are one of 96 businesses who have signed the Vision for Literacy Business Pledge 2023. We know that lacking vital literacy skills holds a person back at every stage of their life. As a child they won’t be able to succeed at school, as an adult they will be locked out of the job market, and as a parent they won’t be able to support their own child’s learning.
As businesses, we must focus our support on these areas of disadvantage that have been particularly affected, especially in light of the cost-of-living crisis. By working with other businesses, schools, charities and government, we can prioritise literacy skills in these communities and ensure that the young people who have been most affected are given the support that they need to thrive.
At Vercity, we are committed to taking practical steps to tackle low literacy by engaging our employees in volunteering, supporting the local communities where we work, and shining a spotlight on this at a national level. During 2023, we will elevate the literacy issue within our business and take action based on the needs of our local area to close the literacy gap and safeguard children’s futures.
